    Key Messages – Personalisation for community learning disability staff means:

    • all staff work to develop a partnership between themselves and those who want a personal budget
    • staff perform an enabling role which gives people with learning disabilities choice and control
    • work to support users to undertake a self assessment, make best use of the Resource Allocation System to secure funding and help people to develop a support plan
    • ensuring people have the right information about what they can purchase
    • collating unmet needs and giving this information to commissioners to help them develop greater choice in the market
    • the task includes the development of community and natural supports to promote people’s independence, autonomy and active citizenship
    • all staff should have good training, support and development opportunities to enable

    Implications for people with autistic spectrum conditions and their family carers

    This At a Glance briefing examines the implications of the personalisation agenda for people with autistic spectrum conditions.

    Produced by Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) the key messages it contains include;-

    Personalisation for people with autistic spectrum conditions (ASC) means:

    • treating people with ASC as individuals who have control over their lives
    • understanding that traditional service settings may not be the best option for people with ASC
    • ensuring that the person with an ASC takes as much control as possible over their supports and life design
    • understanding how a person’s routines and rituals affect their life – this is only possible through high quality support planning
    • ensuring that all staff supporting the person are trained in ASC and that training is refreshed regularly
    • enabling the person to develop meaningful relationships with others, to reduce safeguarding issues and empowering the person to sustain relationships
    • ensuring that people with ASC and their families have good access to information to help with decision making.

  • Life Story Network

    The National Life Story Network was launched at a conference in Leeds on 12th February. The network provides a national forum (www.lifestorynetwork.org.uk) to support the use of Life Story work among people with mental illness including dementia.

    Life Story is a growing area of interest in policy and practice relating to the care of people. The Network has been promoted and supported by an independent steering group, with representation from a range of national and regional partners, including the Dignity in Care (DH) campaign, the National Dementia Strategy, Mental Health Foundation and the National Mental Health Development Unit.

    everywhere.

    Supporting Parents with Learning Disabilities and DifficultiesThis booklet has been produced by the Working Together with Parents Network (www.right-support.org.uk). The Network was set up with funding from the Baring Foundation and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation to support the development and sharing of positive practice in supporting parents with learning disabilities and learning difficulties.

    This booklet tells the stories of six families headed by a parent or parents with learning disabilities or difficulties, from England, Wales and Scotland, who have been
    enabled – with the right support from professionals – to look after their children and safeguard their welfare.
